Trade Channels
Dont know if this has been suggested, and i didnt see it in the index of ideas. So iam gonna say it.
Have two different trade channels. Buy and Sell. Simple as that.
Instead of having one big trade channel. And have them different text colors to of course.
That is it. Comments? Votes?

If trading is to remain a part of the game something needs to be altered, the trading channel is not up to it at the moment, 2 channels might help it would have to be tested to be sure.
Personally I doubt it will be enough but am at a loss to know what could be done to improve matters.
The Current situation
Trading takes place mostly in a few key places in the game.
The start cities take the brunt of trading IE
Ascalon - Shing Jea Monestary and Kamadan with lions arch and Kaining center coming in close behind.
To sell you need to announce what you are selling and since new players are arriving all the time you must continue announcing.
Given that a dozen or more people are in one location and repeating their sales pitch every 15 seconds or so there is just a bewildering stream of text moving up the screen blink and you miss the item your looking for.
I feel we the players should continue working at this till we come up with a few good ideas and put them to the design team.
I will have a think and see what I can come up with

For stationary trade text, press P. Yes, the rushing effect makes things difficult. That just means spread out a bit into different districts. I rarely trade in D1 anywhere except Kaineng, which is fairly quiet.
Using a party-search tailored WTB/WTS, your text is stationary, easy to see, and viewable in all districts.

I take your point about using P or using the party search "I will look into that".
I find little problem selling one or two items, Its when I gather lots of items onto one character and decide to sell them to players.
First because trader prices are laughable and second because it helps players newer to the game than myself.
The fact that I might get rich is important but secondary, Honest
Usual result is I have to type a longish message saying what I have to sell then some fool will come and say show me what you have.
What are you looking for I ask
Show me everything you have
Sigh
You then spend 10 minutes going through your stock a few items at a time at which point they will say.
Do you have any axes or something else you havn't got its a hard life making a living selling.
I want to sell within the game in character not on ebay or bend or break game rules in some other way.
Just want it a little easier for sellers to sell and buyers to buy without loads of repetative typing.
I do hope the design team have a good plan for GW2, redesigning the present game to include easy trading might just take too much of their valuable time better spent elsewhere.

Have three channels.
Buying.
Selling.
Services.
Buying and selling are obvious but Services could be like Runs and such. Also, add a filter so if a message starts with WTS, WTB Selling ot buying in general chat then it is all blanked as if the person were swearing, this would really help.

The answer to trade is merchants. Create merchants for all sell-able items. Characters are there to adventure. That is there specialty. If they are wanting to play for moeny and power they should go to Tycoon or play Monopoly - not an RPG.

I don't like the idea, creates too many channels devoted only to trade. Instead, the Party menu should group players selling and buying. And the game should recognize it when players type "W T B" or "Buying" or other variations.
I seriously don't get why people don't want their buy/sell advertisements to spread to different districts...

The trading option I would really like but I bet you its unworkable is the option to dump your items on a merchant and state a price.
Then players see the item and asking price and the deal is done while I adventure.
Merchant gets 25% I get the rest, oh the joy of dumping all my green/gold weapons for a reasonable return without standing yelling my head off for hours.
I could dump all my minor items at shing jea, ascalon or kamadan and new players could have them for the stock merchant price.
This would give them a decent start.
While we are at it could there be an npc loan agent for all those who just want a temp loan of 50G.
Oh and a clown with a big rubber hammer for anyone who asks when is the emperor coming or when can I get my mask 2 days after the festival is over.
ok that's all my annoyances sorted

Well this "Would" take a lot of tough scripting, a lot of main-code editing, some image replacements, and possibly cause a complete server failure due to a small mishap with the program...but it'd look like arenanet did something. If that's not the effect your going for then

XDDDD What are you talking about?
Far from it.
Adding channels is as easy as adding a new 'tag' to sent text strings.
A tring is tagged as 'buy' and then other receibe it as 'buy'.
Then the client filters the ones you want to see or not.

I don't believe that the "Buy", "Sell" and "Other" rule would work for channels. If you sell stuff and post in the Sell server, where do the people buying post? In the buying server. That means no sales and no buying, just people spamming consistently without gain.
And in a fit of brainstorm I just realized the PM option. But otherwise, people will just flood the channels and wait on a rock for an item and then people won't get into the channels because they're too full. And of course, then the same would happen for every buy/trade server.
Sorry, but I vote against this idea. I myself have had a good enough time with buyers and sellers (as long as there aren't spammers...) in a regular channel.
While we're talking about trades, is there a place on here where I can sell some stuff without a) signing up for the auction site and b) people won't laugh at me for what prices I ask based on the GWGuru feedback? o.0
